Malcolm Toft

In a career spanning more than 50 years, Malcolm Toft has been a vital part of the evolution of recorded sound and the recording process. Starting his career as an engineer at the legendary Trident Studios, he recorded such legendary artists as David Bowie, The Beatles, T-Rex, James Taylor and more.

By the end of the 1960s, multitrack tape machines began to offer higher track counts, opening up a new world of studio creativity. However, working on the commercially available consoles of the time left certain needs unfulfilled. When Trident Studios began exploring studio upgrades and asking manufacturers for new workflow features, console makers were either unable or unwilling to implement these new ideas. Malcolm convinced the owners of Trident Studios they could build their own console to exactly fit their needs. Malcolm was put in charge of the project and together with Barry Porter, the studio maintenance engineer, they designed the console which became known as the legendary A Range.

As word of this new console travelled, people began to ask Malcolm if they could also buy one. Consequently, Trident Audio Developments was formed with Malcolm as managing director. Over the next 20 years, Malcolm used his knowledge as a recording engineer to conceptualize numerous console designs including the Series 80, TSM, Fleximix, Trimix, Series 65 and Series 75 that would become the centerpieces of studios all over the world. The sound of these designs can be heard on over 300 gold and platinum selling records… and the number continues to grow!

Now, Malcolm Toft brings his lifetime of experience to a new line of modern recording equipment. The products of Malcolm Toft expound upon time-tested design principles and usher them into a new era of production workflows and recording formats. Whether a commercial studio or a producer/project studio, Malcolm Toft offers high-quality studio devices for recording and mixing at accessible pricing. From preamps, to EQ, to mixing+routing, or even vibrant color and character, Malcolm Toft products can help build your system for a sound that is uniquely your own.

INTEGRA 8
Small Format Mic/Line Console
INTEGRA 8 Small Format Mic/Line Mixing Console The Malcolm Toft Integra 8 is a small format mixing console designed with today's music production workflow in mind, offering a bridge between the analogue and digital worlds in a space-friendly package ideal for project and producer studios.

Multiple Devices In One Intelligent Package
The INTEGRA 8 incorporates several studio necessities into a single device. Eight world-class preamps with direct outputs from each channel serve as a convenient front end to your DAW/converter. Up to 18 balanced line inputs at mix eliminates the need for a separate summing mixer. Aux routing on each channel can transform the on-board audiophile headphone amplifier into a headphone cue mixer for tracking. A comprehensive master section with monitor controller, talkback and bypassable balanced insert before the master output. These elements purchased separately would far exceed the INTEGRA 8’s price of admission. INTEGRA 8 lives up to its name, it integrates your production system.

The Hub Of Your Workspace
In addition to sound quality inspired by 50 years of Malcolm Toft’s console designs, the INTEGRA 8 can accelerate your workflow. Once wired into your system, enjoy the sense of tactile mixing and routing. Push a button. Turn a knob. Move a fader. What you need is within reach. Minimize the time you spend mousing around and make more music. Ready To Grow With You Each of the INTEGRA 8’s eight channels features a bypassable balanced insert. Allowing users to grow into their favorite outboard hardware EQs, compressors, and other processors. Use the AUX outputs to feed hardware reverbs/delays and adjust the mix with FX Returns. Just wire your hardware up, use your DAW to route your D/A converter output to the INTEGRA 8 channel of your choice and get right into a hybrid mixing with analog hardware. No patchbay or constant plugging and unplugging of equipment necessary.

EQUATE

8-Channel 4-Band Vintage Console EQ with Sweepable Filters

The Malcolm Toft EQUATE features 8 Channels of EQ based on the Series 80 console originally developed by Malcolm Toft and his team in the late-1970s. The EQUATE takes this legendary 4-band British EQ and integrates sweepable High and Low pass filters, making a total of six bands of control for powerful tone shaping possibilities.

Recording or Mixing
Whether tracking or mixing, the EQUATE provides all the essentials to sculpt tracks to be the perfect fit in your mix. A classic sound combined with a simple, yet precise, set of controls. Great for sub group mixing ahead of summing or create hardware inserts in your DAW I/O settings for hybrid mixing. Give your hand a rest from the mouse and reach for actual knobs.

EQ and Filters - A Closer Look
Each channel of EQUATE has a combination of different filter types.
● Low Pass - 1.5KHZ to 20KHZ 12dB per octave cutoff
● High Shelving - 8KHz with 15dB of boost and cut
● High Mid - a sweepable bell from 1KHz to 15KHz with 15db of boost and cut
● Low Mid - a sweepable bell from 100Hz to 1.5KHz with 15db of boost and cut
● Low Shelving - 80Hz with 15dB of boost and cut
● High Pass - 20Hz to 350Hz 12dB per octave cutoff

The High and Low Pass filters can narrow the overall bandwidth of tracks, great for reciprocal EQ techniques to keep tracks from fighting for the same space in your mix.

The High and Low shelving EQ work in a Baxandall-type manner. Centered at 8KHz and 80Hz, respectively, they can be used like traditional shelves but can also be used to lean the whole track when applied to extremes in opposite directions. Similar to a seesaw for frequency response.

The overlapping Mid bands are peaking, or bell, type filters with a fixed Q chosen for it’s musicality. The frequency controls are sweepable, great for finding problematic frequencies. Hear an unruly resonance in a track? Boost the gain and sweep through the frequencies. When you find it, subtract the gain. Additionally, when using the mid range bands close to the slopes of the shelving bands, you can alter the shape of the midrange bell, creating new EQ effects for unique sounding tracks.

Simplified Connectivity The EQUATE has I/O through balanced ¼” jacks and Tascam pin format DB25 D-sub connectors to ensure seamless integration with a wide range of equipment, allowing you to connect directly to mixer insert channels or straight to the analog I/O of any D-Sub equipped converter/interface.

A Sound Investment

EQUATE brings historic sonic pedigree to studios at an exceptional price per channel. A space friendly, 8-channel analog EQ, to expand your recording and mixing EQ options. Built with through hole components for future serviceability to last a lifetime. Handmade in England by Malcolm Toft.

PUNISHR

500 Series Harmonic Saturation and Colour Shaping Processor

The Malcolm Toft PUNISHR is a 500 series analogue harmonic saturation module with four powerful tonal shaping processing.

The Malcolm Toft PUNISHR includes three different saturation paths that can be combined to create all kinds of sonic enhancements or destruction. A two-band EQ, based on Malcolm Toft 1970's inspired circuits, deliver a powerful way to place the tone in a mix and can be placed pre or post-the three distortions paths.

FEEL THE CRUNCH

With a choice of Symmetrical, Asymmetrical and Iron (transformer) saturation in any combination, the PUNISHR offers powerful ways to make the source stand out. Each mode includes a dedicated IN control to engage or bypass each section so you can hear what each circuit contributes to the final result. All saturation elements include a dedicated level control knob.

NOT JUST A DISTORTION UNIT

Despite what its name suggests, the PUNISHR is designed not only for sonic mayhem but also to bring life, motion and excitement to otherwise dull sources, helping to add depth to sometimes over compressed samples, or lifeless recordings.

The PUNISHR includes a two-band EQ inspired by Malcolm's 1970's EQ designs, providing simple powerful tone-shaping capabilities. Both shelf bands include a single frequency point (100Hz/8kHz) and can be placed pre- or post-distortion for added versatility and have been chosen to enhance the analogue distortion circuits in the unit.

Furthermore, it includes sweepable full-range high-pass and low-pass filters to help focus the distortion within a mix and an overall Wet/Dry mix control.
